By Day Four, I had found my driving mojo. I loved my big blue car which by now felt like home, and I was feeling increasingly comfortable on the long and often incredibly winding roads. And it was on the 172km drive from Queenstown to Te Anau, that I really did find myself stopping at every single SCENIC OUTLOOK signpost. It was all just too good.
I also stopped at the Five Rivers Café for a coffee and a date scone. I mention this because I stopped here on the way back two days later too. It was the only place open for miles. And miles and miles. There really were times I felt like I might be the only tourist in New Zealand.
When I arrived in Te Anau, I drove along the lake. The biggest lake in the South Island at 344 sq km. And I took this photo before heading to the local supermarket for some all important supplies, peppermint tea and liquorice. It was as cold as could be and a storm was brewing. And I could hear the rumble of thunder in the distance. But it was set to pass quickly and I was excited about visiting Fiordland the next day.
